A Beginner's Guide To The ILETS Exam Procedure
The IELTS is one of the most widely accepted English language proficiency tests in educational, immigration, and professional settings. It assesses a person’s ability to use and understand English in a range of contexts, including listening, reading, writing, and speaking. The key details about the IELTS are as follows:
Types Of ILETS Test
1.Academic IELTS- This test is basically for those students who wants to study at the level of Undergraduation and Post Graduation in an English Speaking Country.This is ideal for individuals seeking admission to top universities or membership in prestigious professional associations.
2.General Training ILETS-This test is basically for those students who wanted to study abroad or who want to migrate to an English Country for Higher Education ( like US,UK or Australia) or to work in an English Environment.
Basically there are 4 types of test or Components in ILETS.
1.Listening (30 Minutes)
Test Structure-
The listening assessment comprises 4 authentic audio recordings (discussions and presentations), showcasing diverse native English speakers with varied accents and backgrounds (including Canadian, New Zealand, and UK influences).
Content-
Section 1- It is consist of dialouge of two persons talking randomly about thier daily life.
Section 2- A monologue in a social setting, such as a speech or public address.
Section 3- In this there is a conversation or dialouge between four persons, basically there is a group discussion of upto four people in an academic training.
Section 4- A talk on an academic topic (or lecture).
What is Assessed
Listening section examines the student’s ability to grasp specific details, primary ideas, inferences and attitudes within various audio presentations.
Question Type Format
You are to listen to the audio then respond to 40 questions consisting of multiple choice, matching, sentence completion and short answer type questions.
2.Reading (60 Minutes)
Test Structure-
This reading consist of three sections total of 40 questions.In this the questions and reading material depends upon the type of ILETS test you’ve selected whether it is General Training ILETS or Academic Training ILETS.
For Academic ILETS:
The reading section consists of 3 long academic passages taken from books, journals, and magazines.
Topics can be on science, history, culture, or the arts. These are typically more difficult and contain more advanced vocabulary and academic vocabulary.
There are many types of questions, such as matching headings, true/false/not given, multiple-choice, and sentence completion.
For General Training IELTS:
Section 1: Social survival — Includes texts such as advertisements, notices, or brochures (short, functional texts).
Section 2: Work survival – Material relevant to work, such as firm policies, instructions, or employment adverts.
Section 3: General reading – An extended text, usually a section or article in a newspaper or magazine, on a general topic.
Skills Assessed: Reading, extraction of information, opinion detection, and inference
3.Writing (60 Minutes)
Test Structure-
In this section you need to complete total two tasks. Also in this, the type of task differ according to General and Academic ILETS.
Academic Writing-
Task 1: Graph/Chart/Diagram/Process Description:
You are presented with a visual (chart, graph, table, diagram, or process) and asked to summarize, describe, or explain the information in your own words. You should point out the main trends, differences, or stages.
Minimum word count:
150 words
Task 2: Essay Writing:
You are given a question or statement on an academic subject and asked to write an essay in response. You need to present an argument, discuss both sides of an issue, or give your opinion.
Minimum word count:
250 words
General Training Writing:
Task 1: Letter Writing:
You are assigned to write a letter based on a given situation. You can write a formal letter, semi-formal, or informal letter, based on the prompt. All points in the task need to be covered in your letter, and it needs to be well-structured.
Minimum word count:
150 words.
Task 2: Essay:
In the same manner of Task 2 in Academic Writing, you will be expected to write an essay in reaction to a point of view, argument, or problem.
Minimum word count:
250 words.
Types of Writing:
Task 1 (Academic): Summarizing data or describing a process.
Task 1 (General Training): Writing letters (formal, semi-formal, or informal).
Task 2: Writing essays in response to issues or arguments.
4.Speaking Section (11-14 Minutes)
Speaking Section consist of an interview with the examiner and consist of three parts. Face-to-Face Interview assesses your ability to communicate effectively in English.
Part 1: Introduction And General Questions (4-5 Minutes)
Part 1 Consist of general questions that can be personal questions as well like your Family, Friends, Hometown etc.
Purpose: Purpose is to check, if you can speak clearly and confidently about every topic.
Part 2:Long Turn (3-4 Minutes)
In Part 2 you will be given a Task Card and 1 minute to think about the topic and prepare yourself for that. After that you have 1-2 minutes to speak about the topic given to you. The examiner may ask you follow-up questions at the end of your speech.
Purpose: The purpose is to test your ability to speak at a lengthy topic or a sudden topic given to you without interruption.
Part 3:Discussion (4-5 Minutes)
In Part 3, the examiner have ask more complex questions from the topic given to you in Part 2.
This part may include discussing about your topics, discussing abstract issues, have your point of view, express your opinions, give justifications about relevent matters.
Purpose: This assessment evaluates your capacity to participate in nuanced conversations and articulate your thoughts in a clear, organized, and logical fashion.
Purpose of Speaking Section
1.Fluency-Your ability to express ideas smoothly and logically.
2.Vocab-The breadth, precision, and appropriateness of your vocabulary.
3.Grammar-The correctness and variety of your grammatical structures.
4.Pronunciation-The clarity and intelligibility of your spoken English.
Scoring System
The ILETS Scoring System based upon the 9-Band Sacle of very four sections (Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking). Then their will be average scoring for all of the four sections to determine the final score.
Band 9 = Expert user
Band 8 = Very good user
Band 7 = Good user
Band 6 = Competent user
Band 5 = Modest user
Band 4 = Limited user
Band 3 = Extremely limited user
Band 2 = Intermittent user
Band 1 = Non-user
Band 0 = Did not attempt the test
Total Test Duration
Total time required for ILETS exam is 2 hours and 45 minutes
Listening: 30 minutes + 10 minutes for transferring answers
Reading: 60 minutes
Writing: 60 minutes
Speaking: 11–14 minutes (may be scheduled on a different day)
